This is the continuation of Dougie and Mat’s
story of how they were kidnapped and sold into sexual slavery. They have begun
their training with Nikolai who must mold them into the perfect submissives before
they are sent off to their new Master.
It’s not the story, it’s definitely me. I’m just
not interested in Dougie and Mat’s dilemma anymore. I don’t know if it’s all
the psychological stuff, all the internal debate, Nikolai or it’s just not
moving fast enough for me, but I’m done with this series. It’s still
well-written with great characters, but apparently my tastes have changed. Don’t
let my ennui put you off reading this series.

It’s
Valentine’s Day and Jack Bowen is grumpy. Even though he’s hanging out at his
favorite club, The Spread Eagle, he lost a bet to Bret, the sub belonging to
his friend Marcus. He has to wear a stupid hat provided by Bret all night.
Plus, it’s Valentine’s Day and he has no date. Until a young, hot, naked man
walks through the club and kneels in front of Jack. Things are looking up after
all.
I
enjoyed this story much more than Once a
Brat. Ricky Douglas is a sub, but not a brat at all like Bret is. I don’t
like Bret much, but since he has the best interests of Ricky in mind I’ll give
him a smidgeon of credit. I think this story is a great intro to M/M BDSM. It’s
not heavy handed and it’s not excessively light. It’s also not fluff. Also, the
twist? Loved it! For a short story it packs quite a bit of feeling into it and
I found myself loving Jack and Ricky. I’d definitely read more stories about
them. This is a self-contained story. It’s not necessary to read book 1 to
understand book 2, but if you’re like me you’ll want to read them in order.

Aaron
Banks has had a grueling few weeks and he just wants to relieve some tension at
the Spread Eagle. When a buddy points out a new sub on the scene and informs
him that said sub is a virgin, Aaron isn’t all that interested. Until he gets a
look at Danny Clarke, that is. He’s hooked and he wants Danny hooked to him
before another Dom claims him. Lucky for Aaron, Danny seems to want the same
thing. But when they leave the club Danny surprises Aaron with some important
information. You know what they say about assumptions, right?
Hmmm…this
one has a bit of a twist that was interesting. Danny is right sick of
assumptions and it makes him a bit pissy. But it just seemed to me that he was
going to cut off his nose to spite his face. Lucky for him Aaron was more
flexible than I would have been. I would have walked out. Anyway, it turns out
that Danny and Aaron fit together like two pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. Another
great intro to M/M BDSM by Kim Dare. This is a self-contained story. No need to
read others in the series to know what’s going on, but you’ll want to seek them
out when you’re done.

Samantha
Winterbourne loses her mother and her prospects for making ends meet are dismal
when her rich grandfather reluctantly agrees to help her find a job back East.
Samantha doesn’t want to move near the family and friends that snubbed her
mother when she married ‘beneath her station’, but a girl needs to eat. Enter
Tera Carlisle, old school chum of her mother’s, and her husband Evan. She
offers Sam a personal assistant job and Sam chokes out an agreement. Soon she’s
taking up her new duties, but before too many months pass she discovers
something startling about her employers. Taking her metaphorical balls in hand,
Sam sexually dominates Mrs. Carlisle while Mr. Carlisle is away and when she
has Tera well in hand she goes after Evan. Tera is a guppy and Evan is a shark.
Is Sam biting off more than she can chew?
Oh,
my. This is one steamy read. The steamy yummy bits take awhile to get to, but
they are worth it if you like M/f, F/f, domination and humiliation. Sam is
gutsy and pretty much a take no prisoners kind of gal, but she’s a little
too…much, I guess, for me. When she goes after Evan I was like, “Are you out of
your fucking mind?!” Wow. She’s definitely ballsy. Or has a death wish. And she
enjoys pain too much for my tastes. Anyway, this is a great read that will keep
you wriggling in your seat.

It’s
been centuries since the war between cyborgs and humans, a war that forced
humans underground. Imogenne and her people survive fairly well, coming out for
occasional night raids looking for supplemental food and avoiding the Wroks. On
the verge of being married off to a man she doesn’t love, Imogenne is restless.
She’s not like the other women. She has strange erotic dreams and her sexual
appetite is large. She doesn’t understand what is so different about her until
the night she is captured in a Wrok raid. Wroks, a mixture of biological and
mechanical, have been stealing women in the hopes of finding some to mate with
and have children. So far all of the women who mate with a Wrok go insane from
the mating. Yoevin, leader of the Wroks, is growing desperate to save his
people from extinction. He knows there are certain women out there who can mate
with a Wrok and not go insane, but he’s losing hope of finding them. Until he
captures Imogenne. She is different, but is she different enough to make his
own?
A
dark and yummy dystopian erotica. What a combination, but it works! Imogenne is
the result of a few centuries of evolution. She is just what the Wroks need to
have children. But Yoevin is torn. He needs her to mate with all the available
Wroks for the best chance to produce a child, but he wants her, needs her only
for himself. Disregarding protocol he treats Imogenne differently from all the
other women they have captured.
Imogenne
isn’t a bad character, but I felt that Yoevin was more fully developed. I could
really feel his struggle to do what was best for his people as a leader and
what he selfishly wanted to do for himself. His appearance is frightening, but
the pheromones and Imogenne’s own sexual appetite work to bring these two
together. And the steamy scenes? Wowzers! This story isn’t going to be for
everyone even if you like erotica. It’s dark, there’s captive sex, the guy is
far from human looking and the sex is brutal at times. But there’s something
else, too. The beginnings of love and hope for a new world.

A
woman walking down the street with a couple of duffel bags decides to lighten
her load. Something about a prostitute draws her eye and she makes the decision
to give a bag to her. When she approaches the thin woman the prostitute shows
her to a ratty apartment and demands payment up front. The anonymous woman pays
and then explains she only wanted to give away her duffel bag full of clothes.
The prostitute gets angry, but soon the two women are exploring each other in
every which way they can.
This
is a wonderfully written story, but it wasn’t really my type of thing. While
f/f isn’t my usual read, I don’t mind reading stories with woman on woman and
the steamy parts are definitely steamy. The part that’s not really my thing is
the introspection that goes on. In other words, this story was too deep for me.
I know, I’m shallow, but I love me anyway. *winks*

Grayson
Harper is on a long overdue vacation in New
Orleans with his two best friends, Jerry and Cornelia.
When Cornelia is laid low with a migraine, Jerry drags Gray to a voodoo
priestess for a love spell. Gray thinks it’s a waste of time, but Jerry persists
until Gray gives in. However, after the visit to the so-called priestess he
starts having the most vivid dreams where he submits to a yummy Dominant man.
What.The.Hell?!
Oh.
My. This is one delicious short story. Gray is used to being in charge. He works
all the time building his business into the success it is today, but his love
life sucks. When he needs to scratch the itch he hooks up with his ex, but he
has no time for a relationship. The love spell introduces Gray to a Dominant
man who comes to him in his dreams and each night’s dream is even better than
the one before. The dreams are so real he has marks on his body when he wakes
up. He wants, needs, must find the man who comes to him in his sleep and
introduces him to a side he never knew he had. I love, love, love the ending.
What? You think I’m going to tell you what happens? Ha!

Mysterious
28-yr-old Matheus Taylor is living his life they way he wants when he is
abruptly murdered. Quin, a 1700-yr-old vampire uses Matheus to get an artifact
then callously murders him in a filthy alley. Well, technically Quin turned
Matheus into a vampire, but in order to do that he had to kill Matheus first.
And Matheus never lets Quin forget that he was murdered and turned against his
will. However, Matheus has a little problem. He’s attracted to Quin even though
he swears he’s not gay. So, not only does he have to get used to a new way of
living, he has to confront things about himself he’s buried deeper than the
Mariana Trench. While he alternates burying his head in the sand and reaching
self enlightenment the vampire world is under attack and his past comes back
with a vengeance. Will he, Quin and their friends survive the war to come?
The
title drew me in because I am so not a fan of that crap that is Twilight. After
reading the blurb I figured this would be a good vampire story to, um, sink my teeth
into. And to a point, it is. I love the humor and snarkiness in this story.
Whenever Matheus isn’t whining like a little girly baby he is pretty damn
funny. Quin is sexy and a saint to put up with him. Honestly I both hated and
loved Matheus. I can’t decide if he was more annoying or more entertaining. He
may have the distinction of being the only character I’ve ever read that is
50/50 with me. When he’s being a snarky smartass I love him. His observations
and the way he interacts with his world is so entertaining that when he’s being
unreasonably stubborn, digging in his heels only to be contrary and whining,
whining, whining it kills me that I just can’t stand him.
The
writing is very good and the plot flows fairly smoothly with only a few bumps
in the road, but what really did it in for me is the abrupt ending. It was like
how I feel when I ride a roller coaster. I’m going up, up, up,
clankityclankityclank, I’m cresting the hill and then…whoosh! Right over the
top and dropping straight down. Only with this book, that was it. The drop and
then nothing. The end. Where’s the end?! I was massively confused. And mad. It
was only after I looked around on the internet to see what was up that I
realized the book in my hands was only a portion of the story. It’s apparently
only Volume One and I didn’t see that at the bottom of the blurb. It doesn’t
say so in the title. I loathe abrupt endings. If I had known the whole story
wasn’t out there yet I would have waited. Now, I can go to the website and read
a new chapter every Sunday (there are now 41 additional chapters from where my
book stopped), but I don’t have time for that and I have no idea when it will
be done. So, I’ll wait until the book is truly done, complete, fini before I go
back to it.
I also need to mention the editing in this one needs some work. A few mistakes I can ignore, but constant mistakes need to be mentioned. The biggest problems were missing or duplicated words. If a fine tooth comb was used then a finer toothed one is needed.

Series ~ The Actuator, #1
Author ~ James Wymore, Aiden James
Published ~ 13 August 2013
Genre ~ Sci-Fi
Pages ~ 278
My Rating ~ 4 bites out of 5
Red
McLauren is a Key Hunter and when he’s told to escort a group of Machine Monks
out to survey some rocks when The Actuator is getting ready to fire up an event
he’s uneasy. Something feels off and when the event happens and everything goes
haywire he ends up being a leader even if he doesn’t feel like one. Someone has
sabotaged the dampeners and the entire world has changed and not for the
better. Eighteen confirmed Machine Monks created pockets of alternate realities
and four more unconfirmed means the world is in chaos and people are dying by
the millions, possibly by the billions. Those from the base are the only ones
who know what happened and they need to put the world back before humanity is
wiped out. A task easier stated than done.
I
can’t recall having read a book that has a machine that can alter reality in
the physical sense. I mean, completely change the world into whatever reality
parameters the person has selected. The Machine Monks are addicted to the
Actuator and get a high from when it substitutes reality for their own. Each
Monk has a favorite genre, be it horror, steampunk, historical romance,
paranormal, fantasy, sci-fi, etc, so when they feed 20 or so fantasies into the
Actuator and the dampeners (which restrict the change to a small testing area)
fail those fantasies become realities all over the world. It’s chaos and death.
The thought of having to find the keys in each reality in order to change it
back exhausted me and I wasn’t even one of the people doing the rescuing. :D
Well-written
and fast moving the story made me feel as if I was really there. The characters
are great even the ones I wanted to bash over the head, but I have to say that
I love Red best. There’s something about a reluctant hero, one who never really
thought it would come down to him that I really like and Red is very likeable.
The multiple POVs really help with the vast scope of the story and make the
experience just that more rich. The thought of the world being carved into
different sections of fantasies made real just boggles my mind. It got me
thinking…if I was a Machine Monk, what would my slice of the world be like? Uh,
oh…I have a feeling it would be a very naughty world indeed. *fans self* All-in-all a solid sci-fi adventure.
