Guest Review ~ Fourth Wing

Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.

But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter—like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.

She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.

Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom's protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.

Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda—because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.

Garrett's Rating ~ 5 bites

Fourth Wing is a winding tale of a young woman named Violet and her struggles of surviving “college”. However Basgiath is not your typical college. In Basgiath there are four quadrants: riders, healers, infantry and scribes. This book follows Violet through her everyday struggles to survive life in the riders quadrant. Fourth Wing takes normal young adult problems, such as finding yourself, love, heartbreak and betrayal, and then shakes them up by throwing in life or death situations, magic, and the best of all DRAGONS! Yarros has created a land fueled by magic but governed by dragons and the humans they choose to tolerate. Page after page this book keeps you hooked, whether it’s with everyday struggles, flaring tempers, or dragon fights. Yarros has built the stage for what I’m sure will be a whirlwind of a series.

I will admit that the pace of the book may not be for every reader. The beginning takes its time as Yarros vividly builds her world and characters, creating real connections to her characters ensuring your investment in their lives. Once the scene is set however, the book takes off on a roaring adventure, twisting and turning like riding on the back of a dragon. Yarros also doesn’t stray away from knocking the wind out of you or her characters. She also doesn’t hold back when it comes to drawing emotion out of her readers. No one is safe in Basgiath, not even you!

I graciously give this book a much deserved five stars, Yarros is an amazing writer and creator. Don’t just take my word for it, go out and get your hands on a copy of Fourth Wing as soon as possible because trust me, you want in on this ride!

Hi! I'm Garrett. I like reading to escape my everyday life and I always try to find the art hidden in the mess. I'm a sucker for a good classic Disney movie. I absolutely LOVE Christmas, playing D&D, and really enjoy puttering around outside in my flowerbeds and watching the birds. My wife and I also foster cats/kittens, so the house is overrun with adorable beans and toys everywhere.

Garrett just created Goodreads and Twitter accounts so he can talk about books. Go give him a follow!
