12-year-old Mina is running from the law. Or what stands for the law in this story. Soldiers. There’s a particular Sergeant who wants something she has - a power. When she stumbles across an old lady in the woods, Mina hides in her wagon. That’s when things get really weird. Mina finds out that the old lady, Gam Gam, is a necromancer and she’s willing to help Mina out of this tough spot she’s found herself in. So, Mina joins Gam Gam, a ghostly knight, and undead horses and a cat while they set off towards the coast. However, before they get there, Gam Gam logically decidses, before they can safely make it to the sea, they need to take care of the problem that is the Sergeant.
This is a book full of loss, suffering, and despair. But it is also full of hope, learning, and compassion. Deep subjects for a shortish book and yet it works.
A steady pace, wonderful writing, and great characters make this a delectable read on a gloomy day. Or any day, really. If you like your fantasy a little on the dark side, but served with some humor, too then don’t pass this up. Be advised, don’t be snacking when the zombies are described, because ewwwww.
