Hello and Happy Sunday!

9/1/2025

On the Home Front

Sunday ~ Finished moving my knickknacks from the old livingroom into the new. Did some laundry.

Monday ~  Kyle had his assessment app't at Carolina Psychological for autism/ADHD testing. Then made an appointment for next week for the actual tests. I had a 90 minute dental in the afternoon that was torture. So glad that's done. Anna went to the podiatrist to get both her big toes done. Her ingrown nails should be a thing of the past now. If she gets a job interview though she'll need to wear her Crocs since her toes are wrapped up. lol

Tuesday ~ Rocky had a morning app't to get some bloodwork done. The last test two months ago showed a slight elevation in his liver values so they want to recheck. I don't remember what I did the rest of the day.

Wednesday ~ Left in the morning to get bloodwork done for Trip but there was like a 40 minute wait, so I said we'd go earlier tomorrow. Then we stopped at BJ's for some stuff and Waffle House to fill our bellies. On the way out though we caught the neighbor who lives across from Irene's place (neighbor who died in 2021 and we adopted her dog and cat - if you've been following me that long you know the story) by his mailbox, so I stopped and asked about the trailer, new mailbox, and fresh mown lawn there. He said a guy claimed to pay someone $1400 to live there and he was sent the keys. I was like WTAF?! The keys fit, but the guy was trying to have the power turned on and they wouldn't do it. Duh. The property is going through probate now. I thought the brothers had hired someone to do some work before selling it. This house is absolutely not livable! Whoever buys it will need to bulldoze it which is a shame. It was built in 1865, originally a log cabin then added on to over the years. Anyway, the neighbor's daughter (who is also a neighbor next to him lol) used to sell real estate, so she made some calls then ended up talking to one of Irene's brothers in Texas. He's the one I have his number, the other brother lives in Colorado. I think. Anyway, she put him on a video call and he told the guy in no uncertain terms to get the fuck off the property or he'd call the police. The guy had been using a solar panel for shit in the house and according to the neighbor, had tidied up a little bit, but it still had nasty food in the kitchen and it stinks. And he'd been living there about a month! I had no idea! Never saw anyone around. And how the fuck did he get keys to the place? I thought only the lawyer had those. Unless the people who had been squatting there and stole all the electronics and shit made keys and then scammed this guy. I wouldn't doubt that one bit. Anyway, I called the brother in Texas and he gave me permission (again, because he did this already back at the end of January) to go in the house and see if I could find any family photos to save for him. So, Anna and I are gathering some people to do that. Probably next Saturday. Maybe we can get some windows open and let it air out. The place is rotting away, so who knows?

Thursday ~ Took Trip earlier than Weds to get his bloodwork done then hit Food Lion for some groceries. Kyle brought tamales home from a co-worker. I'm counting on getting more when the kitchen gets ripped out. lol

Friday ~ Worked on the blog because I forgot a Friday post. Midway through the wasband wanted to come by and get the battery charger for the tractor so I stopped and packed up some of his stuff here in the office so I'd have some more room. Then I finished the blog post. Picked up Kyle from work and we had leftovers for dinner. Scheduled an 8'x8' Pack Rat for 9/12. I didn't want to spend the money on one, but it will make things easier and Phase II shouldn't take anywhere near as long as Phase I.

Saturday ~ Did the cleaning. Why does it take longer than I think? Because I keep getting sidetracked that's why. Also, partway through, I got a text for a CVS code which means someone was trying to log into my CVS account. Or it was a glitch. Either way I had to stop and change my password for that account and I changed my email, too. Which meant changing my blog email as well since they are connected. Technology is so convenient! Not always. Ugh. Ordered Texas Roadhouse for dinner and picked it up at 4:30. Which means no cooking for a couple of days. Yay!

Today I intend to work on this mess of a house. I have so much to do it's hard to focus on where to start. I think I'll definitely put up my rod and sheers for the patio door and put the blinds up in Anna's room since her blackout curtains and tension rod came. Before that, we'll need to clean the windows. She also wants to make a quick trip to Lowe's so we'll probably do that first thing. I need a few things, too. Then I'm hoping to work on her room for a bit. I need to move some things in the living room to make room for the refrigerator, freezer, snack dresser, and microwave. I may start packing up extra mugs and drinking glasses and cookware I won't be able to use once the stove is out. We need to empty more of Anna's boxes so I have boxes to use. I do not want to buy more boxes!

Construction News Phase II is set to start September 15th. Taking out the breakfast bar, half-wall and post by the door, and the fireplace. Replacing the fireplace wall with a regular wall. Ripping out the cabinets in the kitchen & replacing with new custom-made ones, enlarging the pantry, and making an L-shaped island. Replacing the sink & cabinet in the laundry room for a larger one and adding cabinets above the sink and washer/dryer area. Making the hall closet larger. Ripping out all the 25 yr-old carpet in the main areas and hallway as well as scraping the popcorn ceilings. If all goes well, it should take a month. Should be meeting with the contractor and all the subs (plumber, electrician, cabinet guy, flooring dude, and painter/drywall guy) next week. I cannot wait for this to all be done so I can put everything away where it belongs. In the meantime, oh boy oh boy, do we have a lot to pack up and get out of the way. I have everything picked out now except drawer pulls. Knobs or handles? I'm not sure what I'm picking yet. lol

Touching Nature: It's SO gorgeous out! I have a ton I could do outside, but this week has been a lazy one. Looks like the 70s/80s will be here for a bit yet so maybe I can get a few things done outside in-between packing things up inside.

Book News:  I got bupkis to report here. Finished another audiobook. Have written no reviews.

Don't Touch That Dial!: Mostly skipping around Angel.

At the Flicks: Nope

Cyberspace Playground: Wordle, Word Lots, Crossword Jam, Solitaire, jigsaw puzzles, the Finch app - is anyone wants to be friends just let me know.

Randomness:   Vitamin C, people! We're already dealing with large outbreaks of measles and the fucking plague, of all things, again. Do not bring back scurvy!

Carol's Nuggets of Wisdom: You don't have to be "traditional" in anything you do. For years I thought a comforter/quilt should be on my bed. I like them. They're light, pretty, and warm. Too warm for me though. I would always kick it off while I slept. Then I thought: Why the fuck am I bothering with a comforter/quilt? I bought a lightweight soft blanket at Big Lots and now I just have a sheet and blanket on my bed. It doesn't look as "put together" as it does with a comforter, but I'm done making myself miserable for a "look" that only my kids see. lol Yeah, I could just flip it off the bed to sleep then flip it back on, but that's too much trouble. Plus, it would be on the floor where the cats are likely to barf on it. I'm happy with my new set up. I sometimes still kick the covers off, but it's not nearly as often. And I do still have a comforter (and a quilt) in case we actually get honest-to-goodness cold weather here in NC. lol

That's it for me. AVR News Update signing off. May all your books enthrall you.

  1. I always enjoy the construction before and after, it's during I hate. You seem to have a really good team for yours. I find it easier to do a bunch of stuff when the weather is so gorgeous. I have heard great things about the Stacia Kane series but haven't managed to read it yet.
