--- AVR News Update ---
Hello and Happy Sunday!

On the Home Front: Saw the diabetic counselor Weds then managed to sneak into the schedule for the 1st 3-hr class on Thurs since hubby was off. We can't make class 2 until May and class 3 until June because of hubby's weird ass schedule. But that's ok. We learned some great info in class 1 and the counselor was happy that we'd already made changes. She said most people don't. That boggles my mind. Why wouldn't you?! It's really not as hard as I thought it would be. Really, the biggest adjustment is serving sizes. What do you mean a serving of pasta is about the size of my fist? How is that even possible?! :D

Touching Nature: We transplanted some seedlings and started some more seeds on Weds. And then it rained all day on Friday, at times quite hard. Though still a bit soggy out, yesterday was the perfect Spring day though today is shaping up to be the same. Too bad Mother Nature is such a twat and won't let us enjoy more days like that. Temps are supposed to creep up this week. blerg

Book News: I managed to get many posts drafted and 6 reviews written. Go me! I went from being 14 books behind to 9 books behind and now I'm 12 books behind. But I'm getting ready to finish up 5 cookbooks, so that will knock the number down again.

I have a guest reviewer for Wicked Weds. Since I'm behind and needed something besides graphic novels to fill in, she was excited to help me out. You'll be seeing more of her in May. :) Also, I have May all scheduled and most of those days are ready to go. Just need to draft up a few more and I can get back to reading for June.

Don't Touch That Dial!: Still near the beginning of Season 8 (we're on E:07) of our Supernatural rewatch. Haven't had time to sit and watch anything.

At the Flicks: Nope. Inching closer to Captain America: Civil War though.

Cyberspace Playground: Zip. Just diabetes research and recipe hunting.

Randomness:  I've done this. Not this week, but many times in the past.

That's it for me. AVR News Update signing off. May all your books enthrall you.

    1. I was so afraid that even switching to whole wheat pasta and bread my husband wouldn't be able to eat it. Some people have problems with any grains raising their sugar, but with what we've experimented with so far he seems to be ok. So, yay! We can have pasta, even if it's a smaller serving. LOL

  2. Wow.. You are really up to speed with your blog. 6 reviews written and getting May all scheduled?? I’m so jealous right now.
Great job on working on the diabetic adjustments. As a nurse I can definitely agree on what the diabetic counselor said. Most people don’t really adjust or not as fast as you seem to. Truly amazing! ;)
Have a great week and happy reading!

    1. I'll tell you a secret...I cheated a little. 4 of those reviews were for graphic novels since that's about all I could read lately. lol But hey, reading is reading, right? :D

I was so surprised when she told us that only about 1 in 10 people will change how they eat, let alone exercise to help with the diabetes. They rely on medicine alone. WHAT?! My husband's goal is to get off the medicine, but even if he can't then at least we'll be eating healthier. We're still trying to work the exercise portion in, but as the Dr. said, this is a long haul adjustment. We can't do it all at once, no matter how much we want to. LOL So pairings of foods and serving sizes are the things we're working on right now. :)

  3. Sounds like a great week for you...enjoy your haul. Love the look of If the Shoe Fits.

    Thanks for visiting my blog.

  4. If the Shoe Fits looks so cute. I have had the Siren in my tbr forever! Glad things went well with the class, that you survived nature and are spending time with my boys the Winchesters :) Have an awesome week!!

    1. *Your* boys? You know you need to share, right? lol People have been telling me to read The Siren for a long time now. So I guess I'll finally be giving it a whirl. :)

  5. I think it's a very good idea to change how you eat straight away to make dealing with diabetes easier. I might cry if someone told me to eat less pasta, but at the same time, there's a lot of sugar in those carbs!
I'm so excited that you're reading The Siren soon. I love, love, love that series so much! There is a lot going on, some of it a bit disturbing, but it's so well written and the characters are solid.
Have a wonderful week ahead and happy reading.

    1. I agree! That's why I don't understand why people wouldn't at least get started on making changes. I still have food in the house that isn't the best, but I can't afford to waste it. Just trying to make it work with what we need to be eating. We're getting there though. :)

People have been bugging me for a long time about The Siren. The blurb never really did it for me, but I've been told it's up my alley. I like Femdom, so we'll see if it lives up to their assurances. :)

  6. You have all of May scheduled??? I'm so jealous! You've had quite the productive week with the plants and the nutrition. Good luck getting it all straightened out.
Don't worry I haven't abandoned the boys of Supernatural! This week has been terrible for TV watching but I'm heading back to it soon!

    1. I couldn't have done it without Amelia guest posting in May. Well, I *could* have, but they'd be more graphic novel posts. LOL Anyway, I just need to get 7 posts drafted (2 of those are mine the rest are Amelia's) and then when she writes up her reviews I can slot them right in. Tada!

Yay! I love those guys! Even when they're being dumbasses. LOL

  7. I can't imagine why people wouldn't follow the doctor's advice, especially with something like that. That's nice the class was helpful.

We had a nice weather this week, I'll try and send it your way. Good luck with the gardening! We don't have a garden, but I love seeing plants grow. we do have one plant in the window sill, which almost died and then we cut a piece off and planted it anew and it's doing great now, yay!

Sounds like you were quite productive with all those reviews you got written. And you have all of May scheduled already that's great! I was a few weeks ahead with reviews, but now I only have 3 or so reviews done for May. I really need to start reading and reviewing a few short stories soon to catch up again.

Publishers never send me e-mails about netgalley, the reason I am there every day is my own fault. Although I am getting slightly better at not requesting everything that looks good.

    I hope you'll have a great week!

    1. I know! *shakes head, baffled* And I'm glad they have classes. So far they've been extremely helpful.

I dedicated a day to drafting posts and I've got them all ready to go now. Yay! It's a relief to be ahead on the blog even if I'm not ahead on my own reading. I'll get there though. :)

  8. Yes, I think what I really could benefit from is eating correct serving sizes. I have never eaten that small amount of pasta in my life. I don't understand how people wouldn't start making changes with that knowledge, but I do know that some people really don't care. They are going to live their life the way they want, even if it means cutting it short. Glad you guys were able to get into the first class so soon! I was ahead with all of my reviews and posts for April, and now it is nearly the end of April and I need to get ahead again. I have so many books I need to get read for the beginning of May. I hope you have a productive and relaxing week!

    1. It's the damn serving sizes that we're struggling with. We look at the plate and are like...ummmm. LOL But we'll get the pairings right eventually. There are foods he can have unlimited amounts of that will fill us up. Like salad. We don't eat near enough salad and it's something we like!

I'm glad we could get in too as it was very helpful. :)

  9. The small serving sizes take a time to sink in! My dad had a really difficult time with this when he was fist diagnoses. It can be demoralizing to realize just how much you need to reduce your food intake by and have to weigh everything.
Well done on the reviews and enjoy your books this week!

    1. Yeah, all the really good stuff has to be small. Dammit. LOL

  10. You do have to learn to compensate for the small pasta portion with large veggie portions, though not really as good....lol. :) I am glad you are doing well with the change. Lot of people don't want to change cause they don't want to be told what to eat. :(

I am wanting to see CA: Civil War but I don't like seeing my two favorites fighting. :(

    Happy reading,

    1. We were surprised that there really isn't much he can't eat as long as he watches the carbs. Obviously the really high sugary stuff is either out (goodbye pop, Country Time lemonade and flavored coffees) or as an occasional small treat (like ice cream, cookies, etc). And I can always look for diabetic-freindly sweet treats to sub.

I knwo what you mean. The kids are hyped to see it, but I don't like when people who are supposed to be on the same team fight. :(

  11. I'm always amazed that people don't listen to doctors. My FIL always thought doctors prescribed too many pills until he got high cholesterol and decided to take pills instead of changing his diet. He is borderline diabetic too. The man drinks like a pitcher of orange juice every morning. The doctor told him no to that, so then it was on to Crystal Light, which the doctor has recently kiboshed too. We'll see what he tries next.

The Siren is wonderful. I love Nora. I hope you enjoy it.

    1. Oh yeah, juice is huge no-no. 4 oz can raise your sugar 50 points and right quick! It's recommeneded for if he has a low sugar reading and gets shaky, to raise it quickly. Low sugar can happen if he skips meals or snacks since his medicine is time-release and works all day long. So no skipping eating either. The diabetic counselor told us he can have Crystal Light so we're going to try it. We bought some yummy sparkiling water at Dollar General and he likes that as a break from plain water. And Pepsi has diet aspartame free pop now and he said it's good for pizza or popcorn times. My husband's goal is to get off medicine. I don't understand some people who would rather take pills. *shakes head*

  12. I know some people who don't follow the doctors orders and it is frustrating. So it's good you and your husband are on the right track. I've got small hands so I would be starving if that was my portion size for past lol, but it is hard to watch the portions. You're close to getting back on track but you do have all year still. I'm behind too but we can only do what we can. I hope you have a great week!!

    1. It just blows my mind. I think people hear they have diabetes and that it's like 20 yrs ago or more where options were less yummy. I'm finding there's a lot of great foods diabetics can eat. Re:serving sizes: Ikr! My husband said, is a serving size your fist or mine, cuz mine's bigger. LOL

The end of the year is a long way off. We've got plenty of time. :)

  13. Glad to know you're making changes. I know a woman who lost her leg because of diabetes, but still has a horrible diet. Her family was sneaking her sodas when she was in the hospital last time. Sad. Have a great week.

    1. Why?! Why would anyone do that? My gast is flabbered. Truly. It is no where near as hard as I thought it would be. Of course, I rarely drink pop, so that's not a big thing for me to give up. lol
