The Walking Dead

Title ~ The Walking Dead
Series ~ The Walking Dead, Books 1-7
Author ~ Robert Kirkman, Charlie Adlard
Publisher ~ Image Comics
Published ~ various listed below
Genre ~ Graphic Novel/Horror/Post Apocalyptic

My Rating ~ 3 bites out of 5

This series of graphic novels follows cop Rick Grimes, his family and other humans as they attempt to survive a zombie apocalypse.

My daughter wanted to read this series so with all the hype about the tv show (which we haven't watched) we decided to read it together. And by together, I mean I picked them up at the library, she devoured them and then let me read them.

I'm not a big fan of horror, but I do like zombies and paranormal stories. This series of graphic novels is well-written and illustrated and the story keeps you turning the pages. However, I'm not a fan of all the bad things that have happened to Rick and everyone else. Jeez, can't they ever catch a break? After what happened at the end of Book Four I said I wasn't going to read any more, but my daughter wanted to see what came next, so onward we read. Now, after the end of Book Seven, I'm at that point again. Really? Just...really?! It might be a good thing that the library hasn't acquired Book Eight or I would have given up. How much more depressing can this story get? As it is, since I have to wait who knows how long for the library to buy the book, I'll probably pick it up when they do.

I'm told the show isn't like the graphic novels. Is it more depressing or less? If it's more, I don't want to watch it. If it's more positive then I might give it a go.

  1. i wouldn't say the TV show is depressing, action packed, maybe. It's built around the group of survivors, much as the books are. i'm hooked on the show, but have not read the books. The Person that got me into the show, said that the show does deviate some from the graphic novel. There are depressing parts, yes, but every good story needs a love triangle, murder, zombies, and adventure.

Loved Your review and congrats on being mentioned on GNS!!

    1. Thanks nd! I'm on the fence about the show. It's on Netflix, so I may give it a go at some point. I just don't watch a lot of tv and the kids already want me to watch Supernatural and Sherlock. It may be quite some time before I get to it. lol

    2. Supernatural and Elementary (is that the Sherlock you mean?) are two of my favorite shows.

    3. It's called Sherlock starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. The kids have seen all that Netflix has and my husband starting watching it. Now, I think I need to watch it, too. lol

  2. Walking Dead, the show and the comic, are dark. Bad people die but they also never shy away from killing off decent characters too. If you found the comic depressing I'm betting you will find the show pretty depressing too. I love it but it's morbid and sometimes makes my heart ache.

    1. Yeah, I'm not much of a horror fan. I don't watch horror movies and I read very few horror books. I like my HEA or HFN. It'll probably be awhile before I get around to watching the show. If I ever do, that is. :)

  3. Hi,
I am watching the series but I haven't read the books. Friends though tell me that the books are good. From what I have seen, the show is depressing but so far, I believe it's OK.

    1. Hi Athina.

The books are good, but depressing to me. I'm sure the show is, too. I may or may not watch. We'll see after I work through the list of shows I want to see. lol

    2. :) I understand...my list of shows is quite big because they go on and on and I just have to see the end. But when is the end??!!:)

    3. There is never an end. LOL And since I don't watch tv very often it takes me forever to get through a series. I guess what I should do is plan some marathons for yucky days. :)
