Samhain ‘Sam’ LaCroix defeated Douglas ‘Uber Psycho’ Montgomery in Hold Me Closer, Necromancer and he’s trying to adjust to his new life of being the resident Necromancer. He has inherited all that Douglas owned including his seat on the Council. Sam, who until six weeks ago didn’t even know he was a necromancer, has no clue what is going on or what he’s supposed to be doing. And since necromancers are pretty rare he doesn’t really have anyone to learn from. Well, he could probably learn from his Uncle Nick, but even if he could find him, Sam is still mad at him. So, he stumbles and bumbles his way through his new way of living until a death throws a wrench into the works. Now, Sam needs to find out who and how they committed the murder as well as discover who is threatening his sister. Some days he wishes he was still flipping burgers for a living.

This story is fast-paced and well-written with humor aplenty. The plot is on the thin side, but frankly I don’t care. I was highly entertained with everything going on in Sam’s life. The characters, for me, really make the story. The gnomes and all of the garden security, the Council, James, Ramon, Frank and Ashley as well as many others are fun to read. The ending was a tad cheesy, but again, I don’t care. I loved this book and would definitely read more about Sam’s adventures.

Matt’s best friend Ashley died of cancer when she was 10. That doesn’t stop her from coming around to visit with him though.

I picked this up after reading Hold Me Closer, Necromancer. I went looking to see if there were more stories in the series and couldn’t believe my luck when I saw this short for free on Amazon. Score!

Ashley is a Harbinger. Matt calls her Death though that’s not what she is. She doesn’t kill people, she’s just a guide for those who are newly dead. Sort of like an usher showing you to your seat in a stadium. She can make herself look however she wants, but she prefers the form of her 10-yr-old self. She says it makes her less threatening to the newly dead who are confused though that can backfire when they have a hard time believing a little girl. She’s smart, funny, loving and occasionally snarky. I loved her. She’s a great character! I’m glad she got her own short story in this one and I look forward to seeing more of her in the series.

Samhain ‘Sam’ Corvus LaCroix is a college drop out working in a fast food place with his best friend Ramon when a potato turns his life upside down. Yep, a potato. A spud, a tater, a po-tay-to. If it hadn’t been for that sneaky tuber then Sam may have continued his clueless drifting for a very long time. Instead, he meets Douglas Montgomery, crazy sociopath and mega powerful necromancer. Turns out, Sam is also a necromancer and Douglas does not like to share his territory with any other necromancer even one as weak in power as Sam, so he gives Sam a week to leave town, become his apprentice or die. Not good options there and the messenger he sent to Sam’s apartment? That is messed up. Sam’s running out of time while he tries to figure out what is going on, dodge the cops and stay alive.

I went into this book without a lot of expectations. I saw a lot of book blogging friends had read it and the blurb sounded interesting, but it still took awhile to get on my radar and then longer for me to actually read it. However, once I started it I couldn’t put it down. I like books about people who have no idea they are something else entirely. And Sam’s situation is one I haven’t seen before in all the books I’ve read. The world, the characters, the villains and the plot are all riveting. I did wonder why Douglas wanted to train Sam at all. With his massive ego and paranoia about having anyone in his territory with any kind of power I didn’t see the point though it made for a good plot device. The end has me wondering though. Did Douglas pull a Voldemort? Hmmmm…

Caledonia ‘Callie’ Walking is a mage. Or wizard if you prefer that term. She freelances for clients and consults for the police. When one of her clients ends up dead, drained of his blood, she takes it personally. After all, she was the one to set the protection wards to keep him safe. Now, she needs to get to the bottom of who wanted the wards broken and why. Unfortunately, strange things are preventing her from finding the who, but when she eventually figures out that it’s Aristos ‘Risto’ Ionios, the why will be the least of her concerns. Surviving her confrontation with Risto takes top place on her To Do List.

Ah, this is a new favorite series for me. I sincerely hope I will be seeing much more of Callie. I really like her no nonsense attitude and the world in which she lives is intriguing. And I like Risto. He’s fascinating and yet, oh so dangerous. I kinda get his game, but he’s so old and powerful he could change the rules in a heartbeat and it would be Game Over. I really can’t wait to read more about him.

This story would easily be a 5-biter for me except for two things. I want some more world building. Granted, this is a short story and it did well for the space, but more would be nice. Also, the writing is a bit choppy, or maybe abrupt would be a better word. It is consistent throughout the story so I’m going to say this is the author’s style. It’s not bad, but it did take getting used to. All-in-all I finished this story wanting more, more, more. Bring on some new cases for Callie!

Thanksgiving dinner is over and Jesse has persuaded Mercy to brave the Black Friday sales. However, around midnight they get into a car accident and when Mercy can’t reach Adam on the phone or anyone else in the pack, she really starts to worry. Using her bond with Adam seems to be her only option though it doesn’t always work they way she’d like since she’s a coyote and Adam is a wolf. Concentrating, she can only perceive that Adam is in pain and filled with rage. Getting a lift from the tow truck driver to her garage she discovers Gabriel and Ben there. Ben is hurt and fighting his change to werewolf so he can tell Mercy what he knows. Now it’s up to Mercy to keep Jesse, Ben and Gabriel safe from unknown dangers, find Adam and the pack and rescue them and get to the bottom of the danger to the Columbia Basin Pack. In order to fill that order she’s going to need her wits about her and draw upon every friend she has.

This book starts out with Black Friday shopping which I would never, ever, ever do in this lifetime or any other. But luckily for Mercy and Jesse they get in a car accident. Yes, I say it was lucky. Because if they hadn’t Mercy wouldn’t have tried contacting Adam or the rest of the pack when Adam doesn’t answer his phone. Worrying in itself, but when she tries her bond with Adam she only feels his rage and pain. Uh, oh. This is not going to be good. For them, that is. For me, the reader, it was fucking awesome! Sorry, Mercy.

Non-stop action, humor, mystery, danger, awesome characters and great writing make this a keeper. But then, I’ve loved all of the Mercy books so far. I love the interaction between characters and learning more and more about Mercy. I will also state firmly and unequivocally for the record that I LOVE seeing Adam’s POV in this book. I am a huge fan of multiple POVs when done with skill and this is. I will also state that Patricia Briggs is very cruel to us worshipping fans who hang on her every word. She parcels out these wonderful nuggets of information so miserly that she could give Scrooge a run for his money. However, it is necessary even as it is cruel. She gives us just enough that we don’t gorge ourselves and are left salivating for more. Cruel and yet brilliant. I know I am salivating right now. I can’t wait for the next book. All-in-all an excellent afternoon read.
