Prince Jean-Michel Grenouille spent the first eight years of his life as a frog until the day a slobbery four-year-old princess came along to his pond and tried to eat him. It wasn’t exactly a kiss, but it worked to turn him back into a boy. Fast forward to a few weeks before his 30^th birthday and he must marry his One or turn back into a frog. Forever. His drunken fairy godmother insists that Beauty is his One even with her sleeping problem and nasty attitude, so the wedding is planned. But when Jean-Michel goes out with his cousin RJ for his bachelor party he accidentally, while quite drunk, hires a hit man to kill Beauty. Oops.  He may not want to wed the slobbery sleepy Beauty, but he doesn’t want to be a frog for the rest of his life either. Now, he must stop a hit man and resist the beautiful Lollie Bliss he meets while searching for said hit man. If Beauty is supposed to be his One then why does he feel as if Lollie is the one he should marry? Poor Jean-Michel. He’s got some serious problems including his tendency to croak at the most inopportune time and his extreme dislike of the color green. Is he doomed to a lily pad forever or will he get things sorted out? Curses are such inconvenient things.

Book 2 in the F***ed Up Fairy Tale series is definitely not for reading to the children. This fairy tale retelling is funny and entertaining, but I didn’t find it quite as good as the first one. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a wild ride with laugh out loud moments and total creativeness regarding the fairy tale rewriting, but there was something missing and I tend to think it was the whole assassin thing that seemed off. It didn’t make a lot of sense, but then when do drunken actions make sense? Anyway, I did enjoy myself and look forward to Book 3, so if you want an afternoon of light-hearted entertainment then I suggest picking this one up.

Rumpelstiltskin has been imprisoned in the Tower for years and years. Now, somehow he has escaped and he’s on a mission to finish the dastardly deed he started so many years ago. But first, he has to pass a message to the Mad Hatter’s son, Robert Darkly who doesn’t live in Thiside with the rest of the weird and dark fairy tale denizens. Robert lives in Othaside or as we call it, normal reality. However, Robert’s life hasn’t exactly been normal though he has no idea why. Well, his journey to discovering who he really is starts with a very rude dwarf in his bathtub.

An entertaining fairy tale retelling that is not warm and fuzzy. The entities in the so-called fairy tales are nothing like what is written in Othaside, I mean, our reality. They are very very different. I had fun trying to guess which person (we’ll say person here even though there are animals, dwarves, gnomes and other weirdos) matched which story. Robert Darkly is a bit of a dweeb. But he’s a likeable dweeb and following him around while he’s following around Lily and two gnomes was quite entertaining. Especially when he starts talking to a voice in his head. Well, apparently he’s not the Mad Hatter’s son for nothing. The ending is left a bit up in the air and I’m peeved I didn’t get to find out who Robert’s mother was. I also have an almost uncontrollable urge to go buy a garden gnome for my front yard. Maybe I’ll just watch some of the Travelocity YouTube videos until the urge passes.

Showcase Saturday is a feature to highlight something in the Book World that has caught my eye. It will most likely be books that I’ve discovered on my own or ones that have been recommended to me, but could be a new-to-me author, publisher, blogger, designer or just about anything book related.

Author Herschel Cozine

I discovered Herschel Cozine through Untreed Reads when I read his short Who's There? in the Fingerprints line of their catalog. Mr. Cozine has several fairy tale retellings that are short and fun to read. Who's There? is one of them and you can find my review of it here. In this Showcase I have three more fairy tale retellings and a short about a man who plays Santa. 

The fairy tale retellings are well-written with good plots and streamlined action making them quick, delicious and satisfying. Saint Nicked is also a great story, but I just couldn't get behind a stealing Santa. Bad Santa!
