I Am Not a Serial Killer ~ Audiobook

John Wayne Cleaver is dangerous, and he knows it.

He's spent his life doing his best not to live up to his potential.

He's obsessed with serial killers, but really doesn't want to become one. So for his own sake, and the safety of those around him, he lives by rigid rules he's written for himself, practicing normal life as if it were a private religion that could save him from damnation.

Dead bodies are normal to John. He likes them, actually. They don't demand or expect the empathy he's unable to offer. Perhaps that's what gives him the objectivity to recognize that there's something different about the body the police have just found behind the Wash-n-Dry Laundromat---and to appreciate what that difference means.

Now, for the first time, John has to confront a danger outside himself, a threat he can't control, a menace to everything and everyone he would love, if only he could.

Not Your Average Hot Guy

All Callie wanted was a quiet weekend with her best friend. She promised her mom she could handle running her family’s escape room business while her mom is out of town. Instead a Satanic cult shows up, claiming that the prop spell book in one of the rooms is the real deal, and they need it to summon the right hand of the devil. Naturally they take Callie and her friend, Mag, along with them. But when the summoning reveals a handsome demon in a leather jacket named Luke who offers to help Callie stop the cult from destroying the world, her night goes from weird to completely strange.

As the group tries to stay one step ahead of the cult, Callie finds herself drawn to the annoying (and annoyingly handsome) Luke. But what Callie doesn’t know is that Luke is none other than Luke Morningstar, Prince of Hell and son of the Devil himself. Callie never had time for love, and with the apocalypse coming closer, is there room for romance when all hell’s about to break loose?

Vampire for Christmas

My Rating ~ 4 bites and a nibble out of 5

Shannon is a demon hunter and Rafe is her partner. Only he isn’t just her partner. He’s a vampire and she hates vampires. But for two years she’s had to work side-by-side with him because the agency said she had to. Now, after one last mission she’ll be free to go. She’ll finally be free of her vampire partner, a reminder of everything she lost. But is she really ready to go? And will Rafe let her walk away without telling her how he feels about her?

An excellent short story about two broken people falling in love. So what if one’s a vampire and the other has been traumatized by one? I love great characters who can overcome difficulties to find their HEA and still manage to work together to do their jobs. Because that gross slimy snot demon is not going to sit around twiddling his um, thumbs(?) while they work out their feelings.

Title ~ Big Red
Author ~ Lorraine Sears
Published ~ 9 November 2011
Genre ~ Fantasy
My Rating ~ 5 bites out of 5

When she was a baby Lindsay’s dad sold her to the Devil as a bride in exchange for his soul, so when Lindsay turns 21 and Big Red (her name for him) shows up and claims her as his she’s quite surprised. And not in a good way. All she wants is to live a normal life and all Big Red wants is for Lindsay to be happy. How on Earth (and in Hell) are they going to resolve this situation?

I love, love, love this story. Lindsay’s dilemma, Big Red’s dilemma and the evil that is her dad. Well-written with great characters, for such a short story I was completely sucked in from the beginning and then when it ended I just wanted it to go on and on. I will definitely be checking out more books by Lorraine Sears.

My Rating ~ 4 bites out of 5

In this combination Fantasy/Sci-Fi anthology there are 29 short stories that are creative and interesting. Some of the stories I completely enjoyed, some were ok and some I didn’t understand, but they were all well-written. If I had to pick a favorite out of them, it would be tough since there were many that I couldn’t stop reading, but I’d say I enjoyed Matty Johnson and Echo’s stories the best. Matty is a colorful Texan traveling to Mars and Echo is the android unit assigned by her father to protect her. But it goes so much farther than that. Wonderful and imaginative!

Shimoni is the noble dog of an Italian Conte and Contessa. Given to the Contessa as a present in happier times, Shimoni is now witness to the Conte’s affair and the Contessa’s discovery of it. He does not want to end up like his friend Greta and her woman who were reduced to poverty when she and her man divorced. So Shimoni is doing his doggy best to keep his Conte and Contessa together.

This story is told entirely from Shimoni’s point of view and confirms what I’ve always said, that dogs are highly intelligent and if they could talk we humans would find that out. Ok, I know this is fantasy and we’ll never know what goes through a dog’s head, but this story is so believable that I’m looking at my own dogs (and cats, for that matter) in a whole new (and possibly suspicious) light. What are they plotting, eh?

In any case, the writing is superb, the plot keeps me turning the pages to see how it’s resolved, the characters are fully fleshed out and the ending… What, you thought I would give away the ending? The only problem I had with this story is it seemed to be overly long. But I loved Shimoni, his daily ruminations and machinations and everyone he came into contact with was fuel for his story. If you ever wanted to experience what it is like to be a dog, then this is about as close as you’ll get.

Howl For It

My Rating ~ 4 bites and a nibble out of 5

Howl For It contains two paranormal stories by authors I love. To read. Authors I love to read. *cough*

Like a Wolf with a Bone by Shelly Laurenston is about Eggie Ray Smith and Darla Mae Lewis, parents to the scary Dee-Ann Smith of many Pride books. Eggie Ray is one scary killer and Darla Mae is a pacifist. Well, she’s as much of a pacifist as a wolf shifter can be. The two shouldn’t have a thing in common, but their chemistry is off the charts and they find they can rub along quite well together. Now, if they can just keep their annoying families out of their business then Eggie won’t have to kill any of his, or her, kin.

My only complaint about this story is that it is too short. I can read Pride books forever and never want them to end. I love the snarky conversation, the descriptions, the shifter interactions and the humor. When I open a Pride book I know I’m going to be entertained and I was not disappointed in this one. I actually rate this a 5 biter even if it was more of a snack than a meal.

Wed or Dead by Cynthia Eden seems to be set in the same world of her Night Watch and The Fallen series. Same world but maybe only loosely connected though I’m not positive. Anyway, Gage Ryder is a wolf shifter, the Alpha of Las Vegas and he’s being hunted. Kayla Kincaid is human, but she’s also something else. A Hunter. When her boss orders her to get close to Gage she does so. And when Gage asks her to marry him, her boss orders her to do so. But when he tells her to stab Gage in the heart with a silver blade on their wedding night, she just can’t do it. So with a Hunter team closing in, Gage and Kayla make a run for it together though neither one trusts the other. And that makes for a shaky start to a marriage.

I always enjoy Cynthia Eden’s writing and characters. The plot on this could have used a bit more in the pre-planning stage instead of starting with Kayla walking down the aisle. I was a bit confused as to what the hell was going on and it made me a tad cranky. However, the plot picks up, things are explained and I was soon on the same page as the characters. If this is a short story introducing us to a new series I look forward to reading more. 4 bites and a nibble out of 5.
