The Man by the Sea by Jack Benton ~ Audiobook Review

John "Slim" Hardy, heavy drinker and disgraced soldier turned bumbling private detective, is hired to investigate Ted Douglas, an investment banker who slips out of work every Friday to visit a desolate cove on the Lancashire coast. There, he walks to the shore, opens an old book, and begins to read aloud.

His wife thinks he's having an affair.

Slim thinks he's insane.

The truth is more incredible than either could imagine.

My Rating ~ 4 bites

A former military guy and current alcoholic private investigator, John “Slim” Hardy exists on booze and slim pickings of cases. When a well-off client asks him to investigate what her husband is doing Friday afternoons he takes the case. But as the weeks go along, Slim isn’t coming up with anything concrete. So he has to do some digging. During the investigation he sleeps with his client. Yikes. That's a no-no. He does some other stupid shit, but I finished this book in November of 2024, so the story is hazy. I don’t really remember the ending. I think it was spooky? In any case, I enjoyed it enough to give it 4 bites and bought book 2, so there ya go.

*I apologize for the lateness of my review. Real Life has been rough the last couple of years.
