Hello and Happy Sunday!
On the Home Front: I did a lot of phone calling this week. I think I was on my phone for more minutes this week than in the last 6 months combined. It was exhausting. And all of the marital debts have been paid. I didn't want to shell out to pay off the house, but since it was a VA loan and wasband is the Veteran, he has to take that entitlement to his new loan for the house he put a bid on. I totally understand, but it was a bummer finding out I couldn't just assume the loan. And taking out a new loan at these interest rates plus closing costs made no financial sense for the amount left on the loan. I pulled the figurative trigger and now I own my home free and clear. So, things with the divorce are falling into place and the exterior work for the house is proceeding along. I met with the contractor on Thursday and the permits are in motion. He laid out where the two additions are going and we're waiting for the inspector to come out and confirm they will not in any way interfere with the well or septic. They won't but it's a step that has to be done. The contractor will be back on Tuesday with the window guy to pick my windows and sliding glass door so those can be ordered since they will take some time to get. I remember when we replaced all our windows in 2022 it took over 2 months to get them. Anyway, the utility company was out Friday before the snow hit to mark where the electric comes down our drive and around the house. The tree guy was going to come yesterday, but with the weather being what it was he'll come the 18th to remove 4 trees including the beautiful white oak out back. 😭 I'm so sad, but the footer for the new addition will damage the roots and it would just die anyway. It's our best tree, too. At least I saved some of the acorns it produced this year. Maybe I can get a new tree to sprout.
Speaking of the snow...we had a storm predicted for Friday. 3-5" of snow and possibly freezing rain/ice. I did all of my usual Saturday cleaning on Friday and Trip and I storm prepped. It's rare we get snow in NC, so it's a Major Event. And since we don't have a generator (yet-that will be one of the outside things being done this Spring) we had to get kerosene for the heaters, bring in wood for the fireplace, and fill the tub with water. We emptied trash, recycling, and the compost bin, too. We were as ready as we could be. It started to snow as I was leaving to go pick up Kyle from work. Anna was able to leave work early. After getting back with Kyle, Anna and I sat on the porch (bundled up) with hot chocolate and watched it snow. Luckily it was not windy at all. The Christmas lights were still up and it was peaceful. Then we ate chili which I had simmering all afternoon.
Did we get 3-5"? Hell no. LOL If I'm generous, I'd say we got about an inch. It snowed (really tiny feeble flakes), then it rained, then it snowed a little on top of that. When I walked the dogs yesterday morning our road was icy. But then it warmed above freezing and started to melt. There was not even enough to sled down our drive. Very sad about that. I miss sledding (and skiing, to be honest) so much. It's going to be warmer during the day and colder at night so everything that melts will freeze. Then it'll do it again and again until it's gone. lol
Touching Nature: Snow! And rain. Then a bit more snow! Pretty but not much good for playing in. lol Been cold. Using the fireplace every night.
Book News: I've been fixing old posts (those posts from 2011 make me cringe), aiming for 1 per day, but had gotten behind. Now I'm caught up. I fix the formatting and broken links or crappy covers and add tags which I didn't do when I started out. I've been adding the books to different shelves on Goodreads, too so this task has been helpful. When I first started out on Goodreads in 2010 I didn't even realize we could make specific shelves. So, redoing these old reviews are helping me fix those categories on Goodreads. Which is nice! I have 25 reviews to write and I really need to concentrate on those today. Eeek! I also hope to better about visiting other blogs. I've been a terrible blogging friend!

How fun to sit on the porch, bundled up, with mugs of cocoa, watching it snow!
ReplyDeleteThe porch was too cold for us. Lulu is a southern dog; she hates the snow. Like you we got maybe an inch then lots of freezing rain. It's exciting to hear about your home renovations. I spent some time with Discord this week and was surprised at how well it's gone so far.

Being able to sit on a porch and enjoy the weather in the garden looks lovely. Have a great week.
