I'm A Voracious Reader : Friday the 13th ~ A Killer POV with Edward Lorn

Happy Friday the 13^th, everybody. I’m E. (Only my mother calls me Edward). Nice to make your acquaintance. I want to talk to you about a little project I’ve been working on—a serial novel entitled CRUELTY. The first five episodes are currently available on Amazon.com, as well as Audible. The idea behind CRUELTY is simple: a slasher film done as a literary novel, one that focuses more on character development than death and mayhem. I went into the project with a few ground rules: no attractive teens who’re murdered due to “immoral” behavior; every cast member should be flawed; and the protagonist should not be obvious. I also wanted to get inside the mind of an unstoppable killing machine.

Growing up, I was a fan of the Jason Vorhees movies. To this day, he’s still my favorite in the realm of slasher films. One of the best parts of Friday the 13^th Part Two for me was Jason’s POV. Throughout that film, and subsequent sequels, we’re allowed behind the eyes of the killer as he stalks his prey. Unfortunately, we never get to hear Jason’s thoughts as he mows down those stupid enough to vacation in or around his beloved Crystal Lake. This always bothered me. I mean, we know Jason’s motivations (Alice Hardy beheads Jason’s murderous mother, Pamela, in the first film), but how does he feel about his actions? Is he simply some mindless killer who lacks conscious thought? Does he get a rush of orgasmic glee while hacking and slashing his way through promiscuous teens, douchebags, and dull-eyed stoners? Is he remorseful, feeling as if he’s only doing his duty, doing what Mommy would have wanted him to do? I might be in the minority here, but I’d like nothing more than to pick Jason’s brain, and because sitting down with Mr. Vorhees would likely end up with me in several pieces by the conclusion of the interview, I decided to create my own unstoppable killer. I wanted to get inside the mind of a silent and destructive force. Thus, Cruelty was born.

It’s no secret that I have a twisted sense of humor and an overall warped imagination. If you’ve read any of my work, you’ll know that I rarely write about “good guys”. This is because “good guys” don’t appeal to me. They’re—how can I put this nicely?—fucking boring. A hero’s motivations are simple: be a hero, save the day, pass go, collect two million dollars ($200 dollars for passing go is so 1980, don’t you think?). Baddies intrigue me. Their motivations are always more interesting to me, because people rarely set out in life with the intention of being a horrible person. So what makes a serial killer with supernatural strengths tick? What goes through their minds while they dismember and deal death sentences? Ah, that is the question, isn’t it? I believe the inner workings of such a mind is far more terrifying than witnessing the carnage take place. If you agree, take a peek into the Cruelty’s psyche. Sit down, kick back, and relax. Forgiveness went for a stroll in Episode Four and hasn’t gone home yet. Oh, no he hasn’t. Instead he meets up with Markum, Holden and Nell Morgan and they don’t know what the hell he is. For that matter, neither do I. I just want to run fast as fast can be, so he never catches me.

Twon & Ollie are up to bad shenanigans at Kerr County Medical Center and now they have Will and Kirk. Man, I hate that fucker Twon. I want him to die, be resurrected, so he can die again. And what the hell is up with Momma? Because she sure as shit knows something we don’t.

Innis, oh Innis. I can’t even…nope, not going there.

Cruelty is bad, bad, bad. *sing song* Cruelty is gonna be in trouble and I can’t wait to see it get punished. Assuming…nope. *zips lips* Not gonna give any spoilers.
